Essential Tips to Get Your Landscape Ready for Spring
Share
Spring is just around the corner, which means it’s time to shake off the winter blues and start prepping your landscape for the new season! Whether you have flower beds, patio spaces, or container gardens, a little early-season maintenance can set the stage for a vibrant and thriving outdoor space all spring and summer long.
Here in USDA Hardiness Zone 7A, we enjoy a wonderful variety of perennials, shrubs, and trees that come to life as temperatures warm up. From pruning and prepping beds to cleaning your patio and freshening up last year’s planters, here’s your step-by-step guide to getting your landscape spring-ready!
1. Prune Shrubs, Trees, & Perennials
Late winter to early spring is the perfect time to prune many shrubs and trees, helping them flourish with fresh growth. In Zone 7A, you can safely prune:
- Crepe Myrtles – Remove last year’s seed pods and shape branches
- Rose Bushes – Cut back to promote strong new growth
- Ornamental Grasses – Trim down to about 6-12 inches for a fresh start
- Hydrangeas – Only prune panicle (PG) and smooth (Annabelle) hydrangeas now—leave bigleaf and oakleaf hydrangeas alone unless necessary
Avoid pruning spring-flowering shrubs like forsythia, azaleas, or lilacs until after they bloom, or you’ll risk cutting off their flower buds!
2. Apply Pre-Emergent to Your Perennial Beds
One of the best ways to get ahead of weeds is by applying a pre-emergent in early spring. Products like Preen or corn gluten meal help prevent pesky weeds like crabgrass and chickweed from taking over your garden.
Tips for using pre-emergent:
- Apply before soil temperatures reach 55°F (usually late February to early March in Zone 7A)
- Water it in to activate the weed prevention barrier
- Avoid disturbing the soil after application—this can break the barrier
By tackling weeds now, you’ll save yourself hours of pulling them later!
3. Refresh Last Year’s Pots & Planters
If you used containers and planters last season, now’s the time to clean and prepare them for new plants.
- Dump out old soil – Refresh with new potting mix to give plants fresh nutrients
- Sanitize pots – Rinse with a mild bleach solution to kill any lingering pests or diseases
- Check drainage holes – Ensure they aren’t clogged before planting

- Sweep away – leaves and dirt
- Scrub patios & decks – Use a mild soap or pressure washer to remove grime
